Following the
Regional Law, after the election in
2005, a new territorial repartition has
been made, with an increase of the
provinces from two to four.
Sassari, the biggest province
notwithstanding the separation of
“Gallura”, is situated in the North part
of the island and it is delimited by a
variegated coast, sometimes plain,
sometimes made of rocks, sometimes open
on gulfs like the “Asinara” one.
For what concerns towns, Sassari, with
its ancient part, full of narrow and
tortuous streets, Porto Torres, the
ancient Roman Turris Libysonis, now
important tourist and commercial harbour.
Alghero, founded by the Genoese as a
fortified towns to protect the
inhabitants from the Saracen attacks,
and then passed to the Aragonese after a
memorable siege. In their dialect, which
is very similar to Catalan, you can find
the traces of this occupation.
Remarkable Castelsardo, a picturesque
town on a promontory facing the sea. |
