2006 Rally d’Italia
Sardegna Presentation Press Conference
BOLOGNA (Italy) – The route of the third
edition of Rally d’Italia Sardegna, has
been presented on Sunday December 11th
at the Bologna Motor Show during the
Memorial Bettega Rally.
Angelo Sticchi Damiani President of the
Organizer’s Committee explained together
with Antonio Turitto, General Manger of
the event and Simo Lampinen, Director of
the Race, the characteristics of the
rally.
The seventh round of the 2006 World
Rally Championship and fourth round of
the 2006 Super 1600 World Rally
Championship will take place from May
18th to May 21st and will have its base
once again in Olbia. The start and the
arrival will be at Porto Cervo.
“Sardinia proved to be the right
location for a World Rally event – said
Angelo Sticchi Damiani – and both A.C.I.
(Automobile Club Italy) and C.S.A.I. (Italian
Car Sporting Commission) will give their
support for the success of this next
edition. I am particularly glad to have
once again the Special Stage of “Mamone”
inside the Mamone penal colony, an
initiative that met with success last
year”.
The rally will be divided in three legs
of three stages each to be repeated
twice, with a total of 18 special stages.
The new route, designed trying to
optimize drivers’ and team managers’
suggestions, is very similar to the
previous edition’s course. It will be
therefore a medium-fast race and once
again very spectacular thanks to the
“Monte Lerno” jumps and the return of
the famous so called “Camel’s Humps’”.
The first two legs will be run on the
Monte Acuto gravel roads, already used
in the previous editions, while the
final leg will take place in the Gallura
territory. “When we chose the route –
underlined Simo Lampinen – we kept in
mind three major factors: safety,
movement of media and spectators,
quality and novelty of the special
stages. The 25% of the route is new”.
Among the stages stands out the Monte
Lermo stage, 31,50 km long, the classic
stages of Terranova, Mamone, Filigosu,
Loelle and San Giacomo and the new
special stages of Siniscola, La Prugnola
and a complete new version of the
historic Campovoglio stage. A total of
1.133 kilometers 350 of which timed
kilometers, half of them held on the
roads of the regional parks. The Service
Parks at Cala Saccaia are provided at
the beginning, mid and finish of the
first two legs, while also in this
edition the third leg won’t have a
Service Park but only a Regrouping at
Arzachena. “The Service Park - said
Antonio Turitto – will have a surface of
80.000 square meters for the teams and
120.000 sqm for parking. As in the past
it won’t be an easy rally, and the
winner would be a real professional”.
A well balanced cocktail then. The race
would be selective and technical as seen
in the previous editions of Rally
d’Italia Sardegna. |
