All
the secrets of Rally d’Italia Sardegna
Interview with Lucio De Mori
Deputy Clerk of the Course of the
Italian round of the World Rally
Championship
“Italy has a high level rally culture,
one of the most riches championships at
national level and has the capability to
organize the best rally among the world
championship rallies. We are working to
achieve this target and we are sure that
our rally is going to one of the best
rounds of this world rally season”.
Who is saying this is Lucio De Mori,
Deputy Clerk of the Course and Safety
Officer of Rally d’Italia Sardegna, one
of the most important man in rallying at
international level. He was born in
Belluno (northern Italy) in 1950, De
Mori has been working for this rally
since the first edition in 2004 and
therefore he knows even the most hidden
characteristics of this race.
“It’s a race that is putting its root
deep in this territory. A race that
lives in touch with the people living in
Sardinia, that are beginning to feel
this race like part of them.
As far as concern the technical point of
view it is a safe rally, the average
speed is not very high, but the drivers
have to be concentrated all the time.
This race has some very peculiar
features, very different from the other
races of the World Rally Championship”.
A world level event needs a lot of
people. How many persons are going to be
employed in the whole to prepare this
rally in Sardinia?
“As far as concern the organization we
have approximately 1500 persons,
including officials, marshals, persons
in charge of security, medical service,
time-keepers, all persons in charge to
guarantee the good unrolling of the
race. We have to add other 1000 persons:
drivers, mechanics, team managers and
others and at least 400 persons of the
police and military force. Furthermore
there are journalists, tv cameramen and
press in generalnational and
international, I would say other 400
persons”
An “army” that works uninterruptedly for
the organization of the race. Could you
tell us all the steps to follow from the
first draft of the regulation up to the
arrival?
“The first step is, of course, find the
route and immediately afterwards start
the contacts with the local
administrative authorities in order to
get the necessary authorizations. The
route needs to be checked throughout the
year, it is important to do some
investigation on the spots in order to
solve immediately problems that may
arise during the year due to the
weather, landslide or other facts.
Another important step is the logistic
and the production of all the necessary
documents like Rally Guides, Service
Plan book, Road Book, maps and others.
Al the documents needed to know the
rally. Then we have the race itself and
everything has to be just perfect and we
have to follow closely the whole
unrolling of the race”.
Often during the rally one need to take
extremely delicate decisions in a very
short time. What is the secret not to
make mistakes?
“It is necessary to be constantly
concentrated, to know exactly how
everything works and to know the
territory. All the possible emergencies
are simulated before the race, all the
problems that might rise during the
rally are examined thoroughly. This
makes the reaction quick and
efficacious.
There are several different reasons to
come see the rally from May 18th
to 21st can you tell us the
major ones in your opinion?
“One is to discover or discover again a
different Sardinia, a beautiful and
unpolluted environment, with a unique
landscape. All this besides the show
offered by the best drivers and the best
cars in the world. This year we
increased our efforts to make easier for
fans to follow the race. We arranged
some very nice, safe and spectacular
areas along the rally route, signalled
and easy to reach and marked also on
maps that will be distributed to the
public. Who is interested to come see
the rally can find information on our
web site www.rallyitaliasardegna.com”.
