Dominated by the heights of Mount Limbara (1359
m), Tempio Pausania, built on the remains of the
Roman town Gemellae and during the 13th century
capital of the ancient Judicature of Gallura, is
situated on a plateau rich in vineyards and cork
forest. Its economy is based on cattle farming,
cork processing and wine growing yielding
renowned brands of Vermentino and Moscato The
extremely well conserved houses in the old part
of the town, were built of grey, unplastered
granite, encompass the little squares,
concealing large inner courtyards and small
gardens or scented kitchen-gardens. The sober
charm of the centre is enhanced by the 17th
century parish complex formed by the cathedral
of San Pietro, the church of Santa Croce and the
oratory, while in the upper side of the city you
may find the water source of Rinaggiu, well
known also in the past for the therapeutic
characteristic of the diuretic water.
